Just a few days ago, I had the chance to scuba dive with some underwater photographers from Singapore, Glenn Yong and Jordan Tan. They had their BIG cameras with attached strobes (yes more than one) with various lenses, wide-angle and macro lenses. Scuba diving with them was quite an experience, at certain points it seems like I was walking on the red carpet, camera flashes going flash flash flash!
Capturing the essense of the moment is really what underwater photography is all about.
There exists millions of underwater shots out there showing coral reefs and marine life, with beautiful colours and composition, but what makes a photo standout is the ALLURE and ATTRACTION to the viewer. A good photo must speak to the viewer; a good photo must MESMERIZE its viewer and not just look good.
We made our first scuba dive with the sardines. The photographers were happy with their shots but wanted another chance with the sardines to capture something SPECTACULAR. I had the idea that since there were so many scuba diving shots with the sardines but since the essense of the sardines shoal is best experienced while freediving, that we should definitely try to capture a shot with us freediving with the sardines. So here is the result of our collaboration : FINDING SERENITY is the title of this shot.
